Pallas Foundation Selects Morgan State University To Launch Scholarship in Morgan State’s Center for Equitable AI Named in Honor of Adm. Mike Mullen, Program to Serve Underrepresented Students
September 14, 2023
BALTIMORE, MD – The Pallas Foundation has created a new scholarship program for students participating in Morgan State University’s (MSU) Center for Equitable AI & Machine Learning Systems, to foster the development of emerging leaders at the center of responsible and sustainable artificial intelligence.
Under the program, each year two students will receive a scholarship to study at MSU from Pallas Foundation’s Adm. Mike Mullen Scholarship for National Security Leadership.
The scholarship is named for Adm. Mike Mullen, who served as the 17th Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff for both President Bush and President Obama, from 2007 to 2011 and also as the 28th Chief of Naval Operations from 2005 to 2007. Adm. Mullen, a 1968 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, was deeply involved in mentoring and promoting officers from diverse backgrounds to help them achieve the highest ranks in the military.
“We are excited to extend our partnership with Admiral Mullen to Morgan State University” said Sally Donnelly, one of the Foundation’s Founding Directors. “This scholarship’s focus on students working to develop and expand ethical AI/ML practices will be essential as this technology grows.”
Students who participated in MSU’s Center for Equitable AI & Machine Learning Systems' (CEAMLS) Summer AI Research Institute were asked to write a paper on what equitable AI means to national security and defense, and two winners were chosen. In addition to the scholarship funds, recipients will also be invited to leadership development events coordinated by the Pallas Foundation.
"We congratulate the Summer AI Research Institute participants on their scholarship awards. Equitable AI is not just a matter of ethics; it's a strategic imperative. We must ensure fairness and inclusivity in AI systems to support the informed process of making unbiased decisions. This focus enhances threat detection, effective resource allocation, promotes international collaboration, and supports a diverse workforce. Equitable AI is the way forward to ensure the fair protection of the nation's interests, promote public trust, and accountability." Gabriella Waters, Director of Operations, Director, Cognitive and Neurodiversity AI (CoNA) Lab - (CEAMLS)
